Trends & Tips: Moody? Pick a new paint color!

Did you know?  Color has a measurable effect on the emotions!  If you have a client (or you yourself!) who is complaining of the blahs, lack of motivation, or other types of negative feelings, encourage them to consider adding some new color to their rooms.

1.Use bright, warm colors - such as coral or apple green - to impart a feeling of coziness in a family room. These colors can warm up a cool room that has limited natural light.

2.Add cheer with yellow. It can lift your spirits in, say, a kitchen or laundry room.

3.Think red when you want to invigorate your environment, perhaps in an office.

4.Let cool colors such as sage green and sky blue wrap you in a calm ambience, as in a bedroom. These colors can chill a room, so they're best used when there's plenty of sunlight as a balance.

5.To destress, think neutrals such as pale gray, taupe and beige, which exert a restful influence. They work well in a library, media room or family room.

6.Set a young, playful mood with primary colors. They're great in children's rooms or playrooms.

7.Paint walls dark, rich colors such as deep taupe, brick red, slate gray or sapphire blue to set a formal, sophisticated tone and add a sense of drama. A formal dining or living room is a candidate for these deep colors.

8.Avoid bright white, which tends to be very stark and unsettling, evoking a sterile operating-room atmosphere. In most environments, a white with a touch of rose, ivory or gray is more comforting.

With these new paint colors, a bit of new wall decor, mirrors, mirrors, or paintings are the perfect accent!

Trends & Tips: Creating Beautiful Walls- Background Decor

Background Decor: The Art of Creating Walls Which Personify Your Style

Walls are the largest surface area in a room. Like a giant canvas, they give you the creative freedom to fashion whatever kind of space you want. You can make your walls subdued, letting them blend into the background, or you can decorate them with patterns and colors designed to make them stand out with bold attitude.

The first thing you have to realize about walls is that they are not a completely blank canvas. They exist within the architectural “bones” of the house, and the style of your interiors design has an influence on everything you do to the walls.

Generally speaking, houses built with a traditional style are going to be large, with few windows and doors. They are also often geometrically even, with straight lines running at predictable right angles throughout the interior. Walls in such a space are enormous, giving you a lot of room to get creative with massive works of art or decorative accessories such as huge antique mirrors.

Contemporary homes have a tendency to contain fewer walls. They also generally break their walls up with windows and doorways a lot more than a traditional design would.

You are free to either design a space according to the architecture which was used in its creation, or you can ignore it and create a home which completely contrasts the “bones” of the house. If you do choose to go against the architecture, try to at least choose colors, patterns, and textures which exist in harmony with the inherent design of the space.

One of the most important things which walls do in your home, are create a sense of unity throughout the space. This is achieved by applying similar colors and patterns to walls in every room of the house.

If you want to be brave you can try to apply different colors to walls in different rooms, or even to walls in the same room. However you have to be careful not to create an ambience of total chaos. Bring it together by adding a single consistent element throughout, such as a single color that you paint all of the molding and baseboards in the house.

It is also important to understand the way that your walls relate to your ceiling and floors. Make sure that the colors used blend harmoniously into one another. In general, colors which are lower on the walls or on the floors should be darker, with them slowly getting lighter as you reach the ceiling. This creates a room which is grounded and solid, and which has the illusion of higher ceiling and more space. However if you have a room which is too big, you can reverse that formula to make the space seem cozier.

Materials

Paint – Probably the least expensive and most versatile materials you can use to decorate your walls, paint is available in almost any color you can imagine. It is relatively easy to apply, and has the magical ability to make old interiors look new again.

Wallpaper – Wallpaper is another way to decorate the background which gives you an immense number of options. You could literally spend days looking at the different wall paper patterns which are available at your local stores.

The great thing about wallpaper is that it lets you instantly add a complex pattern to a space. This can be used as the basis of a decorative scheme, where furnishings are bought in matching colors, to create a uniform feeling throughout. Pattern can also make a room seem larger, if it is intricate and tiny, or smaller if the patterns are large and far apart.

Tile – There are a number of different tiles you can use in your walls. Ceramic tiles can be imprinted with almost any image giving you a huge amount of creative freedom. Natural stone and brick are erratic, powerful materials that look very heavy and can make a space seem cozier. Porcelain and marble by contrast are dainty stones that give a room an airier feel.

Fabrics – Coating an old decrepit wall in elegant velvet, or even an attractive cotton coating, can easily dress up a space. Not a good idea in a kitchen where it can catch fire, or a bathroom where it will be susceptible to moisture and stains, it is an elegant way to make a bedroom seem softer. It also makes a living room feel cozier and more inviting.

Wood – There are a number of different wood paneling you can use in your home, ranging from premium exotic hardwoods, to inexpensive knotty pine. Wood has a rustic, natural feel that gives a room a connection to the outside world.

Walls are the background of our lives. They hold us and protect us; they make up the larger part of our interior worlds. When decorating them, remember that they are an almost blank canvas, one upon which you can vent your total creative spirit. And, best of all, it is very simple to take down wall décor as soon as you stop liking it.

Trends and Tips: Chocolate and Cream

Chocolate and cream is one of the most sensual color combinations in modern home decor, and one that retains it's appeal over many years.  For this reason, it's a great choice for those on a budget!   It adds a relaxing and inviting touch to the modern home.  As one of the most versatile color palettes, it can be adjusted to many different individual tastes with the use of accent pieces and decorative pillows or throws.

A long standing preference for chocolate hues is hard to miss in the living areas, where mahogany accents in wood flooring, furniture, and accessories are complemented by artwork, pillows, window trim, and other accessories.
*Shimmery fabric accents adds a bit of luxe to the more somber wood tones
*Using identical frames and mats will accentuate artwork and embellish the space
*Brown, like black, adds depth and punctuation to a space.

Some fun ways to accent a chocolate and cream room:
--adding animal print accents for some visual excitement
--adding a sparkling chandelier or mirror to dress up the room and draw the eye upwards

Trends and Tips: Spanish Colonial Style

Spanish Interior Design Accessories to Decorate in a Rustic Spanish Colonial Style

"Spanish Colonial " style decorating in the home or patio is warm and inviting, visually and also texturally. Living comfortably is the big theme with Spanish style home decor! Colors of rich earthy hues and tones create a palette that is drawn from and enhanced by nature. Bring the rich reds and oranges of terra cotta into your Spanish Colonial decorated home with tiles, fabrics, pottery, leather, ceramics, copper and wood.

With Spanish Colonial style decor, faux finished walls imitating creamy stucco enhances this interior design style. Shades of green and blue bring the outside in. Warm colors in wood furniture and upholstery soften the look of rustic Spanish hacienda style furniture. The look and casual feel of richly colored tapestry throws draped over chairs, a table embellished with a tapestry runner, or an old world theme oil painting compliments this hot design trend.  These elements can bring exciting and unexpected additional colors to the home deco palette.

Trends and Tips: Should Art match the Couch?

Many clients ask us the same question: should ART match the furniture?  The fast answer is: NO.  Art should envoke a feeling or state of emotional response, first and foremost.  HOWEVER, whatever art is chosen to display in a home should look like it "belongs," not as if each piece was chosen by random strangers!  Mixing themes and styles create interesting focal points and conversation starters, and add ambiance to a room.  Use your creative imagination when mixing up art work, mirrors, and other wall decor to create an exciting visual experience for your family and guests.  When done correctly, you'll probably find that your home is one of the most popular on the block!

Here is an examples of different styles that still "work" together.

Good luck and happy decorating!

Trends and Tips...

The newests and latest trends in interior design are just that, the move away from "trends."  Buyers are opting instead, for a more personal and self expressive look and feel.

The "BIG THREE"
Top trends in current interior design...

  • Casual Elegance

  • Relaxed and Cozy Enviroment

  • Soft Contemporary

**Design Retailer HINTS**
Over-sized wall decor elements are "huge, " and they're also best sellers!  As the average size of homes have increased, so have the size of the design elements that go into them.  Look for larger paintings, tapestries, and mirrors.  These are necessary to balance the room and fill the background.

Also, layers of light are important additions to any comfortable, well designed enviroment.  Well placed scones & mirrors brighten the perimeter and add visual texture to walls and rooms.
